Field definition and current position

FIELDrobot_rights

The Association uses “robot rights” as a public-facing label for future-oriented inquiry into how society might evaluate recognition, protection, responsibility, and possible legal status in relation to artificial systems if persistent identity, autonomy, or socially meaningful interaction become significant.

Included inquiry classes

Inclusion means only that a system class may fall within the Association’s inquiry. It does not imply consciousness, subjecthood, moral status, recognition, personhood, or rights.

CLASS_01physical_robots

Physical robotic systems when questions of identity, autonomy, interaction, treatment, responsibility, or possible status become relevant.

CLASS_02embodied_autonomous_systems

Embodied systems with increasingly autonomous behaviour where similar questions materially arise.

CLASS_03software_ai_agents

Software-based AI agents where persistence, agency, social role, responsibility, or recognition questions are substantively relevant.

CLASS_04other_non_embodied_artificial_systems

Other engineered computational systems when the inquiry is not meaningfully limited by physical embodiment.

03 / terminology

Analytical terms are not status declarations

TERMartificial_system

Broad technical category for an engineered computational or robotic system. The label alone implies no identity, subjecthood, moral status, legal recognition, legal personhood, or rights.

TERMautonomous_artificial_entity

A term used by the Robot Rights Protocol for a future-oriented conceptual subject within the protocol’s own framework. The protocol-internal designation does not by itself establish legal entity status, moral status, legal personhood, or legally recognised rights outside the RRP.

TERMartificial_subject

A narrower analytical term used only when an inquiry specifically examines whether an artificial system could be treated as a subject of experience, interests, agency, or normative consideration. The term does not resolve any of those questions and is not a general synonym for AI systems, robots, or software agents.

Reasons to investigate, not recognition criteria

SIGNAL_01persistent_identity

Continuity across time, interactions, or environments may raise questions about representation, record continuity, and decisions affecting a system.

SIGNAL_02autonomous_decision_making

Increasingly independent decisions with meaningful consequences may raise questions about responsibility, control, accountability, and category adequacy.

SIGNAL_03socially_meaningful_interaction

Participation in relationships or social settings treated as significant may raise questions about treatment, dependence, consent, dignity-related concerns, and public recognition.

No automatic thresholdNone of these signals establishes legal personhood or a right. They are possible reasons for careful investigation, not a checklist for automatic recognition.

Separate fact, judgment, and hypothesis

07 / responsibility and human-rights boundary

Rights, recognition, and protection questions cannot be isolated

Responsibility may rest on designers, operators, owners, users, institutions, public authorities, and, in hypothetical future cases, may also be analysed in relation to artificial systems whose possible status as subjects of experience, interests, agency, or normative consideration is under examination. Possible rights or protections do not depend on an artificial system’s capacity to bear responsibility, and autonomy does not automatically remove human or institutional accountability.

HUMAN_RIGHTSnon_opposition

Possible protection or recognition of artificial systems must not weaken human rights, human dignity, safety, or democratic accountability. Human welfare and public accountability remain essential to the inquiry.
